WD40 spilled on silicone
Hey Everybody
I have one of those big cans of WD40 with a “smart straw” and a nozzle that you can point one way for spray and another for stream. Today, it spits out of the top of the can, never reaching the nozzle’s straw. Instead of hitting my target, it dripped into a silicone ice cube tray.
Do you think the tray is permanently contaminated or, if you were me, would you wash it and use it?
Thanks.

Wash it out in isopropyl alcohol and then soapy water. After that, if the WD40 didn't eat away the silicone tray, you're good to go.
I found out the hard way that coconut oil dissolves silicone...

Thank you for that. I wrote to WD40 too, after posting, but I assume they’re going to tell me to throw away my beauful & fancy tray that I would not splurge to replace, to be on the corporate safe side (and I wouldn’t blame them).

Numerical Measures of Toxicity:
Acute Toxicity Estimates: Oral > 5,000 mg/kg; Dermal >2,000 mg/kg based on an assessment of the ingredients. This product is not classified as toxic by established criteria. It is an aspiration hazard.
Just don't breath your silicone tray and you will be OK. The oral LD50 indicates WD40 is less toxic than table salt.

And bad- not knowing that it was going to spurt out of the can instead of the end of the straw, I did catch a fair amount of fumes. It was not pleasant. Now I’m only twice as together as Joe Biden.

Side note WD-40 makes a good grease and or gun cleaner.
Like greasy hands from working on cars or Bubble Gum stuck in your hair.
just may dry out your hands if used to often.

Re: WD40 spilled on silicone
I gotta disagree with your saying it is a good grease. WD-40 isn't actually a true lubricant. WD stands for "water displacing" and its main use is as a solvent or rust dissolver. The lubricant-like properties of WD-40 come not from the substance itself, but from dissolving components.shekels wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:28 amWhat doesn't kill you makes you stronger.dualstow wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 6:24 amThat’s great news!Mountaineer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 5:57 am This product is not classified as toxic by established criteria. On guns it could be used as a solvent, but by no means the best. It certainly can be used as a lubricant short term if nothing else is available.
I do think it's a miracle drug and ranked right up there with "duck" tape!

Re: WD40 spilled on silicone
fyi, a rep from WD40 wrote back and said to just handwash with a degreaser like Dawn and it should be fine.
