TV speaker replaceable?

Post by bedraggled »

It appears my 40 inch diagonal Samsung TV has developed a cracked speaker. The unit is 10 years old. Can a repair shop replace the speaker easily? Are there such repair shops?

I want to keep the set as I understand new TVs have cameras and microphones. I don't want that stuff in the house.

Am I wrong on things above?

The sound is "ok" but if I could fix the situation cheaply I would be content.

All thoughts appreciated, especially those that suggest it's time for a replacement because of new features. I only want a basic TV. Do keep in mind I use a flip phone and love it. DW has the smart phone.

Thanks.

Thanks, Pug,

DW just mentioned we external speakers for laptop use. Are there compatibility problems. Better to find something on Amazon?

Is another solution to go to Craigs list for an older unit? Avoiding cameras and microphones in the house is a major issue.

Any and all are welcome to chime in.

Thanks again

Quick question, what makes you think the speaker is physically cracked? Can you actually see it?

Friend recently had a noisy/crackly speaker fixed just by resoldering a cracked solder joint. Was done in her house and took only about 15 minutes.

Not sure what the labour costs are in US. If expensive, go with Pugs external speaker idea.
If you or a friend are handy with a soldering iron, have a look first.

Gosh, I hope there are *some* new TVs out there without microphones. I was about to say mine’s new, but it turns out the current year isn’s 2016 anymore.

Hal,

As of yesterday, if I increase the volume above a low/moderate setting, the lower voices cause what sounds like "a cracked speaker."

Thanks for your thoughts

Hmm..

Try plugging in a set of headphones/speakers and see if the problem persists.
If so, the issue is probably on the main circuit board amplifier section -> new TV time

If not, try looking at the internal speaker connections. Very rarely do speakers fail.

Used to be an electronics tech many years ago :)

(When it was cheaper to repair than replace, yep I am "that" old)

Hal.

I'm turning 65 next week. I may get a pry bar and look for an old tube.

To continue, Folks,
A set of laptop speakers was laying around. I inserted them into "audio out" and "audio in"-nothing. Maybe laptop speakers aren't the answer.

That amazon sound bar looks good. Also, we gave the fancy tv sound system that came with the TV to our son when we moved to Florida. He is getting that info. I am seriously looking at that Amazon system, too

Thanks, all.

FYI, I bought a Polk soundbar a couple months ago for my 10+ year old Sony TV. Could not get it to work. New technology soundbar optical to TV not compatible with older TV. Learned this after hours of troubleshooting with different TV and a replacement soundbar from Polk.

Edit: my Sony was purchased July 2008.

Mountaineer,

So. if i get the exact system we gave our son that could then take care of the issue.

Is my thinking sound?

Thanks.

BTW,

The Samsung TV model #: UN40C500QF.

If the above helps in the search for compatibility. And it's 10 years old.

I don’t know for sure. If that Old system worked with your TV before, I would think a new exact same system would work now. Good luck!

No pun intended.

My Dad gave us a speaker bar and subwoofer as a gift one year. Boston Acoustics, I think. The bar didn't always send the wireless signal to the subwoofer, so as a result, the dialogue was alternately too loud and inaudible. Had to shelve it. Hope you all have better luck.

I have 2 speakers for a Samsung LTF460Hf07 8ohm 10W if they will fit.

Don't get one with a subwoofer unless you are an audiophile. A standard soundbar will suit most uses.
Probably true. I haven't used one since we moved back into our home, and I think it would drive the neighbors nuts.
I'm not necessarily recommending this to OP bedraggled, but we have a TV speaker from Hammacher Schlemmer. It uses a line of sight signal (infrared?), transmitting it to a small speaker that is plugged into the wall near the loveseat where we sit to watch TV. It's great for making the spoken word audible, as that is what it's designed for. I also love that it has a dial that I can quickly turn like on a stereo amp, and not some tiny remote buttons.
However, I dampens super high and low frequencies, and I would not want it to be my only audio. Hence not recommended as a solution for OP. That is, we keep the tv's own speakers on for the soundtrack.

Also have wireless headphones. Great for not missing something when I run to the bathroom during a commercial or putting clothes in the dryer. (No DVR here).

Does my concern about cameras and microphones in new TVs have merit? Do only "smart" TVs have them? Can I buy a new TV without a camera and/or mic? I think I would buy new at this point, if things get complicated.

Alexa and Echo Dot are not being purchased anytime soon. They may clash with my flip phone and 1991 Honda Accord with 357,000 miles.

I love technical literacy so much!!!! I can't figure out how to enter an avatar in place of my "?." (But I don't really care). My 1948 Western Electric rotary phone sounds great for incoming calls on the land line.

Pug,

I wrote a nice response re my 73 old dentist. (I hope I am as athletic and trim when I am 73). The writing took awhile. I may have clicked "Post A Reply" rather than "Submit."

Stuff happens. I will compose anew later. I seem to have written a sizable post celebrating dentists.

Cheers.

I ALWAYS go to Craigslist to buy used electronics at deep discounts and have good luck in having the seller bring the item either to my house or to my office.

I am in AWE!!!!

My last four cars have been Honda Accords. And, I've actually owned two newer ones that you. My current one is a 2004 but it only has 153,000 miles, a baby compared to yours! The first one I owned (1986) lasted for the most miles - 248,000. To the end never burned any oil and ran so fine I drove to the junkyard. The problem was that it was a Northeast car all its life which meant that after 20 years the rust was causing the whole car to fall apart. Prior to then I'd spent $500 taking care of the rust on two rear wheel areas. Rust was a major problem on my first three. Someone how by the 2004 they solved the rust problem as I've not spent a cent dealing with it.

Great news!. My wife read the instructions. Her father was always advocating that. The TV must be turned off before installing those laptop speakers- we did that. Loud and clear for old speakers shoved in the back of a cabinet for 8 years. She just informed me the speakers must be turned off along with the TV when we're finished. This is getting ponderous, people.

Thanks all.

Vinny,

The car turns 30 on September 1. It's a 5-speed manual. I love a clutch. When I married I had a 4-speed manual transmission and so did she. Our current mechanic wasn't impressed until I asked if he knew of 2 people with 4-speed manuals getting hitched. He and 3 others in the waiting room went silent. The reaction mimicked Rick in Casablanca: "I am a little more impressed with you, Ugarte."

My trick to keeping this car is EOM and synthetic oil. Little plastic parts can dry out and crumble into particles much to the mechanics amusement. The car's been rebuilt over 15 years, including a recent replacement exhaust manifold for $350. A hobby of mine is sitting in auto shop repair rooms.

Further and finally, when I asked the mechanic if a new car would be safer, he said consider the car is made of a lot of steel rather than plastics in modern vehicles. The compression is down 10% and the transmission is tired. Alas. In 4 years I may get a Tesla.

Vinny,

I had $2,500 in rust repairs in 2015. You and I have accounting degrees. Gotta amortize the rust repair.

From 2004 thru 2013, repairs averaged $2,333 per year. Since then repair costs have gone down. 2019: $1,275 and this year under $500. Not much left to repair.

BTW, a site called fuely.com permits people to enter their MPG and fill ups. They also list where to purchase ethanol free gasoline. After my first fill up the car ran stronger. Very expensive go juice, though.

Oh, driving seems more agreeable in Florida. The mechanic said the boots on my front axles will last.

One discouraging aspect to my Honda Accords has been the progressively decline in miles per gallon:

1984 - 33 mpg
1986 - 30 mpg
1995 - 27 mpg
2004 - 24 mpg

What happened to progress??!!!

The first one was a Honda Accord hatchback while the last three have all been fully loaded.

The 1986 I bought for $4,000 in 1997. It used to average $1,000 a year in repairs. The last two years of my ownership of it were $2,000 a year. I seem to remember about $15,000 in repairs over 10 years of ownership.
