You’re missing some words there. She had an i5 for Office or an i5 is fine for Office, maybe.
For everyday needs, RAM is really more important than a top of the line processor.
For video editing, i think she needs to have a little bit of everything souped up. I even looked into an external GPU, but I know she would never tolerate that on her desk. She won’t even tolerate a desktop.

Yes, my missing words were him telling me that for using Office that some i5's are superior performers to i7s with all their cores.

And, totally agree on RAM and its importance. On the computers we were going to have him build for us, we were getting 32GB in each.

For video editing I would imagine that it's the RAM on the GPU that really matters because the GPU is where most of the processing takes place.

Yep. I’m having her check Dell to say if they customize that, otherwise there’s a shop in the neighborhood that can build her one— ooh, they probably only do desktops, though. Maybe I should just spring for a gaming computer. Pricey, but that’d do it, right?

Eluktronics (https://www.eluktronics.com/) can build a monster laptop with pretty much anything you want in it. Here are the specs for the one they built for me, although that is ancient now (November 2018). The new ones can hold up to 8 TB(!) of NVMe SSD. Also note that there is no sales tax because they are in Delaware.

Just wanted to share my favourite tech podcast with you guys here.

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/h ... 1049420219

Hacked is just awesome, and they recently resurrected the show. No, I don't have any personal/financial affiliation with them. So this isn't a shill of any kind, just a great show.

I just switched to Vivaldi which is a highly customizable version of Chromium with the Google. I am quite pleased with it.
I think I decided a few years ago that it was browsers that are responsible for new computer sales. They seem to be the most demanding on computers, seemingly consuming a ton of RAM every time you open a new window in any browser. That's why I want my new office computer to have 32GB of RAM. I no longer want these browsers hogging my computer resources to the detriment of the other work I'm trying to accomplish on that same computer.

Hmm, I don't think so. Well, not with Chrome at least. I have been using a Chromebook for years with an Intel Celeron processor that obviously ONLY runs the Chrome browser; no issues. I think it's all the other stuff that regular operating systems have running.

Definitely the browsers.

I've regularly opened Task Manager and then go to Processes to see how much RAM each process is using. Browsers are absolute hogs. Especially Chrome. Each time you open keep open another tab or window for Chrome, you'll see it running as a separate process and using yet more RAM.

I've never used a Chromebook thus have never probed anything in it. Is it possible that it's somewhat like Apple in that everything has been optimized in it as opposed to a Windows computer which is a mishmash of all kinds of different hardware manufacturers and software creators?

What is the Chromebook's operating system? Does it have the equivalent of Task Manager / Processes?

Vinny, do you have a lot of extensions or add-ons installed on your browser? A lot of times it;s not the browser itself, but all the crap layered into it. Also, websites that are advertisement heavy load painfully slow.
Don't believe it's due to your first sentence because it's worse on my office computer which I treat as an office computer. I clearly believe it is your last sentence which is the cause.

On this home computer they seem to absolutely kill Microsoft's Edge.

Did you ever try GalliumOS on that chromebook or no?

Do you guys like the extremely sophisticated engineering of my external hard drive mount for my laptop?? ;D ;D ;D

It augments my internal 256GB SSD with 512GB of extra SSD storage.

Yes, it's ugly.

No, I don't care. O0

You may move it slightly in the direction where display is pivoting to the main corp, that way once you open the display there will be less of tension on the pivot...? Or maybe Macs are strong enough and 512 Gig SSDs are too lightweight those days... Sorry I am old school guy..

Lol I'm glad you guys are enjoying my super advanced engineering skills! All that schooling has clearly paid for itself!

Your guys' intuition is correct. Since the drive is an SSD it is super light. I would say the drive and the cable probably have comparable weight to each other.

Ultimately, I decided to put the drive right at the centre of the horizontal axis due to the fact that I stow the MacBook in a sleeve when travelling with it. The sleeve has the greatest amount of slack right in the middle.

Current configuration of the 512GB SSD:

~300GB for Time Machine backups; encrypted with password protection
~100GB for storage; APFS file system encrypted with password protection (secure personal storage)
~100GB for storage; exFAT file system with no encryption or password (unsecure storage for sharing)

I'm curious what you guys are doing with your home computers that you need so much computing power.

The only time I can recall in all my years of home computing when I thought I really needed more power was when I tried to edit videos. It becomes obvious pretty quick when you try to do that that the average home computer isn't up to the task.

Maybe gaming? Not really into that myself.

I am regularly using both Dropbox and SyncBack, which are both intensive hard drive access users, and which each consume a considerable amount of computer resources.

I oftentimes have to pause them because other programs will just come to a dead stop with so little computer resources left for them.

So the prevailing consensus seems to be that Apple is now switching to RAM modules that are 12GB a piece for the M3 generation of computers. This was foreshadowed by the M2 MacBook Air being customizable with 24GB of RAM (2 x 12GB).

This would further mean that 12GB will be the minimum spec for RAM starting this next generation and going forward - a welcome change if so.

So many machines are RAM starved. I think it's a major problem with Maca actually. 16GB is just not enough. 64 in my daily driver.
