Workers organize for higher wages

So I'm curious, why isn't it more common for workers to organize into groups to force higher wages and or better rights? For example in something I'm familiar with, in the ski industry it is common for resort workers to have to commute for hours each day through dangerous mountain passes in order to work at resorts that cater to wealthy...think Aspen, or Jackson hole...there are simply no other affordable housing options.. Why don't the workers at these resorts assemble into groups and threaten to walk out on key days throughout the year and shut down operations if the resorts don't build affordable housing options? I'm not even talking apartments....literally 100 square foot bunkhouses would suffice. Instead workers sleep in their freezing cars, commute hours or spend more than 50 percent of their meager salary in order to have a place to sleep. I know, no one is forcing them to take these jobs...but basic access to housing seems like a pretty simple demand. Why do workers not assemble and organize to demand improvements? Eswpcially in today's tight labor market....seems like they would have upper hand in negotiations...

The exact scenario you mentioned is a lifestyle choice where I live. Two things...people do it because it is all about the skiing time not the wages. I guarantee that the most used financial calculation is: "What is the minimal amount of money I need to make to maximize time on my boards?" Second, it's seasonal and most ski resorts don't have anywhere near the volume of business as they do in the winter so they probably aren't too inclined to build stuff that is going to be empty half the year.

Kinda like backpacking Europe...it's the experience not the money.

For most this is a 2-3 year gig and then they grow up and move on to other things. So if you are only doing this a couple of years, why blow a ski season being on strike?
