Wall Street Protests

Post by smurff »

Thousands of protesters from all over the USA have been in NYC, "occupying" Wall Street since last weekend (some arrived earlier to pitch their tents) with minimal coverage by the national USA media despite occasional squabbles with the police.  This is taking place while the United Nations does their annual "occupation" of NYC, raining down general disruption on NYC life for a couple of weeks.

On Saturday some of the Wall Street protesters marched about a mile or so north of the Financial District toward Union Square, where many were stopped by the police.  Some of them were pepper sprayed and clubbed before being arrested as you can see in the YouTube videos.

BTW, The New University (formerly the New School for Social Research) and parts of New York University are a major presence in the Union Square neighborhood, and there is a strong link between students and social protests of all types.  I saw my favorite Japanese restaurant, Japonica, in the background, so a lot of these events were happening around East 12th Street and University Place.  Union Square Park, their destination, begins at East 14th Street.  Street info given in case you're into googling locations.

The Zero Hedge article includes links to other articles with additional info.  I don't know how long the embedded videos will be available, but I'm sure that there will be others on YouTube as the police cannot confiscate all the cameras, mobile phones, mikes, and professional video equipment.
