Politically Correct and other Left Annoyances

Post by dualstow »

Here's my list off the top of my head:

- Yoga classes cancelled at some Canadian university town due to cultural appropriation. "Ok, but it's just stretching," said the teacher.
- Bell Curve author shouted down at various college campuses.
- Controversy over Dana Schutz' painting of Emmet Till.
- Mexican girls at $60,000/year college angry at white girls who wear hoop earrings. Cultural appropriation of the oppressed.
- Tepper Calvin Trillin Chinese food poem debacle. // sorry, Tepper is a character from one of his novellas.

Let's see, what I'm I forgetting? I'm sure there are at least 3 others that I read this year.

You'll notice most of this nonsense is on university campuses. The farther you get from that bubble, the less people take this crap seriously. It just seems silly.

Definitely. Outside of the "safe spaces."

Using both "left" and "annoyance" is redundant.

The worst "annoyance" in my book: college students are now trained to be hypersensitive to the slightest perceived politically incorrect action.

The result has been an atmosphere where it's dangerous to say any more than is absolutely necessary. I talk openly with exactly one trusted person behind closed doors, and minimize all other interactions. If students think that improves the education they're paying $70K/year for, then more power to them.

That is disconcerting, Soph.

Stumbled upon another one this morning. The lead actor of Marvel's Iron Fist was scolded for appreciating fellow actor Riz Ahmed's speech on diversity. Apparently it's not ok to be white and to portray a comic book character who was white even when he was created in the 70s. Never mind that the show is about as diverse as it gets.

You can't give these people any power. The correct answer is, "so what?" If they hector you, lecture you, or try to shame you, just shrug and say, "so what?" If you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

"I don't care" works pretty well too.

My new favorite: It is now racist to correct grammar.
