Rebalancing Spreadsheet

Post by craigr »

I posted a link and instructions to a simple rebalancing spreadsheet with some nice features. You may find it useful:

For those of you with Mac computers or iPads, I've created a Permanent Portfolio Allocator spreadsheet for Numbers. Just type your account values for each asset into the top section and the bottom Rebalancing section will tell you when it's time to rebalance with automatic color-higlighting rebalancing bands.

You can download the Numbers (for MAC OS X only) file here:

* Numbers '09 or higher is required to use this spreadsheet

Feel free to share and pass along!

Hi, Clive:

I've enabled macros and have replaced the asset amounts with my values.  How do you get it to run/calculate?

Thanks,
Coffee.

I appreciate the spreadsheets shared - Gumby's is very nice (haven't had a chance to look at Clive's yet).  I found that Google Docs seems to work the best because you can update most assets automatically with the =GoogleFinance('GLD') formula.

I still haven't found a good way to manually update my LT treasuries, so I just plug those in when I need to check.

I just wanted to comment on my favorite portfolio display.  It's the one at Smartmoney.com, and I've forgotten which of the PP experts here recommended it.  It gives real-time data, allows more than one portfolio (so you can separate your holdings into PP and VP), and it shows the standard daily market indices along with your portfolio for comparison.  It's free and online, and it's at
http://www.smartmoney.com/

Click on "Tools" and then "Portfolio" which will take you to a registration page.  After you register, you can set up your portfolio(s).  There are also other tools there you can use for personal finance, but my focus is on the portfolios.

One of the things I had to do was use GLD and SLV as proxies for the Gold and Silver prices (for PP and VP).  That seems to be one thing lacking in online portfolio forms--no direct market price for gold.  It seems these forms are focused on prices from major USA exchanges like NYSE, NASD, etc. (I don't know whether or not Smartmoney.com has other sites to cover data from international exchanges.)

Anyway, I've been using it for about a week, and it's enlightening.  You get to see the portfolio as a whole (as it was designed to be seen) and how all the volatile parts work together to yield stability.  The updates are automatic, so you don't have to pencil in data, or manually enter data anywhere.  It's not a perfect system (gold bullion prices?  silver bullion prices?), but it seems to be working well for me.

I use smartmoney and also use the option to save as an excel sheet. I use a spread sheet I have been working on for years that has all my holdings and a page that has a modified sheet like Clives and a smartmoney sheet. In a fast moving market I just copy the downloaded smartmoney sheet data into my sheets smartmoney page and I get as close to real time data as possible. My PP sheet imports from smartmoney sheet. So far this is the fastest way I can have my sheet updated, its very close to real time. I use this technique when the 30/20 rebalance band is hit so I can monitor it. I want to rebalance around 35% area but I watch it like a hawk when 30% is hit. I also pay attention to gtu premium when the 30% band is hit.
