The US Dollar

Post by ochotona »

Trump says the US Dollar is too strong, he wants it to be weaker to spur exports. But how does this happen if the Fed raises interest rates in 2017, and they really do have to get off of these unnaturally low rates. I don't see the rest of the world racing to raise rates faster than us. Seems like these two ideas are in conflict, or are there other mechanisms which could be used to weaken the Dollar? Would the Fed ever buy FX to make other currencies more expensive?

Yellen said she'd like to be able to buy stocks like the BOJ and Swiss bank

Could also deregulate/lower lending standards...Greenspan watched the banks do that

"they really do have to get off of these unnaturally low rates" says who, bond salesmen? :)

"Would the Fed ever buy FX to make other currencies more expensive?" How would this work, with all the CBs trying to buy up each others currency?
