Obamacare Premiums Skyrocketing

Post by Reub »

" In another major setback for Obamacare, the cost of health insurance under the Affordable Care Act is expected to rise sharply in a number of states next year, officials revealed Monday. The average premium for some Obamacare plans is set to increase by an average of 25 percent across the 39 states that use the Healthcare.org exchange."

What do you expect? Progressives kill things. Black families, white families, black babies, white babies, medical care, reasonable taxes, respect for authority, respect for God, respect for the military, respect for different viewpoints, respect for country, respect for personal responsibility, jobs, hope, ....... the list is quite long.

Epic. Disaster.

But this is what to expect when government intervenes in a market. What do political lawyers and attorneys know about economics, behavorial finance or cost containment? Absolutely nothing. Wake up, voters!!!

Not sure the problem is government interference per se, or just that not enough healthy people are signing up for insurance. It's way too easy to avoid paying penalties.

On the other hand, it sounds like the promised savings from rerouting people from emergency rooms to the outpatient clinic setting is not materializing. Perhaps the problem is that almost by definition, nearly all people are "sick". It's pretty hard to somehow not have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, deficits in things like vitamin D levels, body parts requiring constant cancer screening etc.

I keep thinking that the medical profession has just gone way overboard on the health maintenance/prevention issue. The fact that there are no tangible results from the massive expenditures should give people pause.

Well, free market insurance companies would rationally join together in a national risk pool to minimize per insured costs. But since government intervention prohibits selling across state lines, every state has to have its own risk pool (per insurance company) which is pretty stupid as some states just aren't going to have the necessary numbers as others. Same thing is at play with employer-provided insurance. And we're also seeing this effect in Obamacare where insurance companies are pulling out completely or there's only one provider left.

There's no savings from the emergency room because ER utilization goes up under Medicaid and it's not a fluke at this point, it is consistent. If you give people free sick care insurance, what the hell did we think was going to happen? Demand would go up. Economics 101.

If the whole ideal was that there was going to be savings and lower premiums by spreading sick care costs of a government boondoggle over as many people as possible by force, that is only going to go so far in the face of perpetually increasing costs from a fundamental lack of competition and behind the curtain cronyism. But don't tell a Progressive. They don't want to deal with reality. They're having sex without using birth control.

But wait, there's more!

Not only are Obamacare premiums on the rise for 2017, deductibles will also be getting more expensive, according to an analysis by insurance comparison site HealthPocket. Deductibles for individuals enrolled in the lowest-priced Obamacare health plans will average more than $6,000 next year, the first time that threshold has been cracked in the three years that Affordable Care Act marketplaces have been in business. Families enrolled in the bronze plans will average deductibles of $12,393.

An optimistic take on this is that the unintended consequence of practically catastrophobic-level deductibles will force consumers to first-party drive their sick care costs, demand pricing transparency, etc..
