WTF is Islamic Meat?

I noticed "halal" ground beef was now available, so I looked it up. Good grief! Let's try and picture this... a bullhorn is constantly shouting "God Is Great!" over and over while an assembly line of Muslim workers slit each hanging-upside-down conscious cow's throat zooming by. And isn't it just like the "Religion of Peace" to make each animal suffer while calling it humane?

The slaughter of a halal animal is called "zabihah" and there are certain guidelines to follow:

Allah's (God's) name must be pronounced during slaughter.
The instrument must be very sharp to ensure humane slaughter. The animal must be slit at the throat.
The animal must not be unconscious.
The animal must be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry. Eating blood is not halal.
These steps must be accomplished by a Muslim or the People of the Book (Christian or Jew.) Many observant Muslims find kosher meat acceptable.
The animal must have been fed a natural diet that did not contain animal by-products.

It would seem nowadays slitting a throat and bleeding to death is not a very humane method, I'd rather get shot in the head, thank you very much!

A lot of non-halal, non-kosher places use bolt guns or something, right? That's how I'd want to go.

I don't know how those halal copycats do it, but my grandfather was a Kosher butcher. I never met him, so this is just hearsay, but I was told that some of the elements include:

- Don't kill an animal in front of its mother, or its child
- Kill the animal with a single blow. I always thought this was more than throat slitting. I think you're supposed to take the head off in one shot, but I don't know.

I was reading this the other day, and saw some differences between halal and kosher. TL;DR - Halal is not in conflict with pre-kill stunning.
