Not at all. As far as I can tell, it is valid.

However, since I don't read Sanskrit, it could be bogus.

Hindi, Balinese and Thai are all very close.  In Bali, I saw a lot of local signs that were still in Sanskrit and no one had any problem with them.

I don't think that's quite right. Thai is tonal, unlike Indonesian languages. I don't know anything about Hindi.
Anyway, Thai and various Indonesian languages do seem to borrow vocab heavily from Sanskrit or something from India, so maybe that's it.

I just had a great conversation at the airport bar with a guy from Sri Lanka.  He said his native tongue is Senegalese and that it is very close to Sanskrit. (I hadn't prompted him with anything...)  He hates that people think he is Indian and he can't understand Hindi at all.  I started to quiz him on the Senegalese grammar, but he really didn't get the concept of grammar.

Bali is very different than Indonesian and Malaysian languages.  It is very much a different language/culture that just happens to be under Indonesian rule.  I find Bahatma Indonesian to be a very accessible language and a gateway to Malay and Cantonese, but Balinese is impossible to comprehend (for me).  The script is very similar to Thai - but that is just my western interpretation.
