Austen Heller wrote: I recently picked up 1984 from my local library.....mind-blowing!  I had heard about this book all my life, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.  I'm 2/3 of the way done, but so far, it is highly recommended.  I may even have to buy a copy to add to my permanent collection, which is saying something considering I only own about 20 books.  Next up on my list...Animal Farm.  I already read the Ayn Rand tomes, which were great as well.  I find the classics to be a much better use of my time than most of the modern stuff (with the exception being Jared Diamond's non-fiction works, which are great).
I posted this a couple of years ago which has some interesting insight about Orwell: http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/ot ... /#msg42394

This Perfect Day would make an awesome epic movie if they made it on the calibre level of The Hunger Games (which I'm still amazed by that even got filmed given the subject matter, nevermind so excellently).  It could have just been another lame BATTLE ROYALE or an overpromised-but-underdelivering Ender's Game or even Atlas Shrugged.  I really don't understand why of all stories available, The Hunger Games got the prima donna treatment before it proved itself.  I haven't read the books; are they really that spectacular that any screenwriter would immediately know it would be a hit, so no expense sparred full torpedoes ahead?

And I do wonder what the deeper meaning is about The Hunger Games being so succesful with mainstream society.

Adolesecent dystopias are in fashion?  [NB I have not read Hunger Games].
It was good being the party of Robin Hood. Until they morphed into the Sheriff of Nottingham
