Ibuprofen adds 12 years to life!
"Regular doses of ibuprofen could allow people to live up to 12 years longer.
In tests, the drug appears to hold back the ageing process as well as helping fight disease.
Ibuprofen, which is used every day at home by people to treat inflammation, pain and fever, may be the key to developing a long sought after anti-ageing drug.
Dr Brian Kennedy, president and chief executive of the Buck Institute for Research on Ageing in California, said: “There is a lot to be excited about.
"The research shows that ibuprofen impacts a process not yet implicated in ageing, giving us a new way to study and understand the ageing process.
“Ibuprofen is a relatively safe drug, found in most people’s medicine cabinets."

I know that you're going to tell me to just use curcumin, boswella, ginger, etc. But aren't these much less potent than ibuprofen found in Advil, Motrin, or its generic form?
"The creatures (in the study) not only lived longer, they appeared to maintain their fitness and health as they got older."

Ibuprofen gives me horrific nose bleeds .... Is there a study that shows Single Malt will extend life for 12?

Drugs are not without side effects:
Cardiovascular Risk [there was a big deal awhile back about NSAIDS increasing risk of cardiovasc risk]
NSAIDs may cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may increase with duration of use

Re: Ibuprofen adds 12 years to life!
Very interesting, especially since curing cancer would only add 3 years. At one time I was taking 6 ibuprofen tablets a day to keep my food intolerances at bay so I could eat literally a couple of pizzas a week for several months. I was like a bear getting ready for winter!
Nowadays, I have what is called "analgesic rebound" and cannot tolerate any NSAIDs at all. The problem is NSAIDs build up in the body. They also destroy your joints over time.
I would think if ibuprofen really did extend lifespan or healthspan, then all the hundreds of millions of old people with arthritis taking NSAIDs or VIOXX would be living longer. Maybe not inhibiting 5-LOX is a contraindication? I concur with Reub that the natural anti-inflammatories are pathetic in comparison, but I keep searching for the holy grail.
But like aspirin, the gastrointestinal ulcer & bleeing risks are seriously downplayed. It's bad for business.
Aging is the greatest risk factor for many diseases, which together account for the majority of global deaths and healthcare costs. Here we show that the common drug ibuprofen increases the lifespan of yeast, worms and flies, indicative of conserved longevity effects. In budding yeast, an excellent model of cellular longevity mechanisms, ibuprofen's pro-longevity action is independent of its known anti-inflammatory role. We show that the critical function of ibuprofen in longevity is to inhibit the uptake of aromatic amino acids, by destabilizing the high-affinity tryptophan permease. We further show that ibuprofen alters cell cycle progression. Mirroring the effects of ibuprofen, we found that most yeast long-lived mutants were also similarly affected in cell cycle progression. These findings identify a safe drug that extends the lifespan of divergent organisms and reveal fundamental cellular properties associated with longevity.

And lets not forget the risk of kidney failure with NSAIDs. I think the article missed the nuance that the scientists are going to try to find whatever it was that caused the worms to live longer, not start a clinical trial of ibuprofen for aging.
Sorry guys, we are very far from a cure for aging. Go read some Robert Heinlein stories instead

I guess this is what the story is based on:

This is what I'd be worried about as well. I'm not sure I want to live a decade longer if I am on dialysis constantly waiting for kidney transplants.WiseOne wrote: And lets not forget the risk of kidney failure with NSAIDs. What do you guys know about Perluxan?:
Fast-Acting Natural Supplement Fights Pain
"Both Perluxan and NSAIDs reduce inflammation by inhibiting an enzyme, called COX-2, which generates inflammatory chemicals in painful areas. However, NSAIDs also inhibit another enzyme, called COX-1, which is beneficial.
COX-1 is found throughout the human body and is necessary for healthy blood clotting, but is most concentrated in the stomach, where it protects the stomach lining. By blocking it, NSAIDs create risk of stomach damage and bleeding.
Perluxan is more selective than NSAIDs, inhibiting the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme without significantly blocking beneficial COX-1. “It has very, very faint activity on COX-1,”? Foreman tells Newsmax Health.
In a study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, samples of blood were taken during a nine-hour period after people took either Perluxan or ibuprofen. Both equally inhibited the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme, showing effectiveness against pain.
However, Perluxan blocked the beneficial COX-1 enzyme to such a minor degree that researchers concluded: “Hops extracts may represent a safe alternative to ibuprofen for nonprescription anti-inflammation.”?
Unlike drugs, Perluxan contains antioxidants. These also help to reduce pain and protect the heart and other parts of the brain from aging and disease."

Sounds promising! A herbal extract as strong as ibuprofen without the side effects would be great. You just better hope the herbal 5-LOX inhibitors are as strong, though.
It looks like its beeen out for a while -- funny that I've never heard of it before:

Hey Reub, this should settle the aspirin debate in a few years:
The ASPREE study, for the first time, will determine whether the potential benefits of aspirin outweigh the risks in healthy people aged 70 years and over.
