I'm a relatively senior technical guy (though not in software), but have no management experience, so I don't really have a feel for how things are from the perspective of a hiring manager (i.e. my future boss).

I would like to engage a pair of recruiters I've run across on LinkedIn, and have a couple of basic questions:

* Is it important to find a recruiter in the same geographic area to which I'm trying to relocate?  My gut says no (internet effect, plus I expect that the relationship between the hiring company's organization and the recruiter is what is really important, and this is built slowly over time), but I'm curious to hear from people with experience.

* Is talking with 2 recruiters OK?  I would certainly let them each know I'm working with the other.

Anything else I should think about?
I have been retired from management and the hiring role for several years, but the first question that comes to mind is "why are you working through recruiters"?  Why not do some homework, find out everything you can about some companies in the area where you wish to relocate, and then deal with them directly?  Prepare your case for why you can do a better job for them than anyone else, including those people who use recruiters as a go-between.  Your initiative and homework and ablity to sell your capabilities will become obvious to the people you want to work with/for.  Just a thought.

The first thing you should do before contacting any recruiters, regardless of your income level, is to buy and read "Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1,000,000+" by John Lucht. Here's the Kindle version:http://www.amazon.com/Rites-Passage-100 ... B00JMHR16I

He is a multi-decade insider in the recruiting industry and will clarify important issues you probably never even thought to ask about.

Sure thing. I think reading that book has produced more net monetary benefits than almost anything else I've done. Other than my weird portfolio of course. :P
