I recently noticed something curious as I drove out of my neighborhood in South Delhi. The road had just been redone and now, on the stone walls that run along either side of the street, about knee-high off the ground, I spotted ceramic tiles with pictures of Hindu gods.

Something similar to that has happened locally: people in crime-ridden areas have gotten hispanic kids and gang members to stop tagging walls by adorning them with pictures of the virgin Mary.

Perhaps this explains why toast is relatively tag and urine free?

In Taiwan, I lived in a small town for a while. There was this wall where people used to illegally dump their trash at night, and a sign promising stiff fines was not deterring everyone. Finally, someone wrote in huge Chinese characters, "If you dump trash here, your entire family line will die out." Nice and clean after that.

WAH, the toast image is clearly that of a tea kettle with steam coming out the spout.

In Indonesia there are signs on public busses that read "Jangan meludah di lantai." Or, "Don't spit on the floor." They are similarly ineffective but they don't come with a death threat.

Ahh, but that steam clearly forms the image of the Virgin Mary on the toast!
