iPhone 6

Post by Tortoise »

So it looks like Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales are breaking records right now. I'm a little surprised, because the main new feature is simply a bigger screen. There doesn't seem to be anything really different or revolutionary about the iPhone 6. It's just a slight improvement on an already solid product.

I do enjoy my iPhone 5 and will likely get a 6 in a few months when I renew my 2-year contract, but I'm just surprised that iPhone 6 sales are doing so well without a totally new killer feature to drive it.

What do others think?

I hear the camera in the new iPhones is approaching DSLR quality from some of the reviews I've read.  My son is getting a 64 GB iPhone 6 to replace his dying iPhone 4 (cracked back, duck tape repair, after a bad fall but it still is functional); he said the 6 Plus is too big to be convenient for his uses.  I have not gone near an Apple store since they came out ... I don't like the mob scene.  I am anxious to see what my son's experience is ... he is pretty techie and discriminating so I'll probably get a good review.

I did install iOS 8 on our two 5s and iPad 3.  Love it, more functional in my opinion but not a "huge" update.

ATT is offering a $300 credit for used iPhone 5 models and a $200 credit for iPhone 4, 4S models that can be applied to an iPhone 6 purchase. I suspect this explains the surge in iPhone 6 sales.

Apple makes great products, but honestly I haven't seen a reason to upgrade since my 4s purchase.  And considering my aversion to contracts, I'm less likely to be swayed by new promotions and phone subsidies. So I'm definitely not waiting in line.

Then again, I've become very picky and jaded about these types of things over time and am admittedly hard to please.  I've designed consumer products for a living for 15 years, and the treadmill of new products has gotten stale and transparent for me.  These days, "older and still great" impresses me a lot more than "shiny and new".

I think a lot of people just have to have what's new. I bought my wife an iPhone 5 shortly before the 6 came out. It's weird to think that her phone is at once old and new.

I have a hand-me-down 4 from my dad and am trying to pry my wife's old 4s out of her fingers so I can try iOS8 -- because what I really care about is software -- but she seems to enjoy having both and using them for different things. I guess I can relate. I still use my old iPod(s) Touch.

The fitness application with the watch is going to be a killer app, in my opinion.  I don't know for how many people, but for me at least it sounds very exciting and useful.

These may just be internet rumors, but it looks like some people are starting to complain that the iPhone 6, which is thinner than the previous models, is more susceptible to bending and warping if you carry it in the front pocket of a relatively tight pair of pants.

Oh well. If it's true, maybe this will cause tight-pants-wearing men to think twice about their fashion choice--which would be a very good thing, IMO.

That's the 6+, from what I've read.  Hopefully it's overblown.

I started to put this in the YouTube thread but it seems to fit better in this one.  Link wording is self-explanatory.
