Tax return fraud on 60 Minutes

Post by I Shrugged »

Did anyone else watch that?  I mean, we all knew the IRS is not very competent.  But they truly cannot find their asses with both hands.

I happened to catch it. Wish I could say it's terribly surprising. The funniest part came when they reported that the credit card companies have basically solved the problem of this kind of fraud, and asked some IRS guy why they couldn't do it too. He responded with the most pathetic answer, basically, "Well, we're really a 20th century organization and this highlights that challenges we face in moving into the 21st century," or some other laughable tripe.

Then again, it kind of makes sense since they're a government organization. If they accidentally send out phony refund money, nobody actually directly loses, since more money is just conjured up to pay it. It's not like there are any real consequences to anybody. Typical government agency. Waste and inefficiency are practically virtues, not vices.
Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.
