Rejoin the UK?

Post by Pointedstick »

From the front page of cnn.com:
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/12/opinion/w ... ?hpt=hp_c2

(CNN) -- Here's a question that seems to be lost in the debate over the Scottish independence vote scheduled for September 18:

If Scotland votes to secede, does that open up a spot for another country? And if so -- Scotland, can we take your place?

[...]

In the past few years, as America has degenerated into political and economic chaos, it has become increasingly clear that we would be far better off if we apologized for our revolt against the Crown and requested to rejoin the United Kingdom.

There are four main ways America would benefit from unification with the UK: Brits have better health, less inequality, excellent manners and -- let's face it -- a superior culture. Let's improve our quality of life by joining them.
Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.

There are four main ways America would benefit from unification with the UK:
*Brits have better health [care]... Regrettably true

*less inequality... patently silly

*excellent manners and -- let's face it -- a superior culture. I think the author has spent too much time watching Downton Abbey

On a side note, it's not exactly clear that the anticipated vacancy in the UK will actually happen...

Median wages are 25% greater in the US (vs UK), dwelling spaces are over double (here vs there), disposable income is nearly 30% greater, so why do people automatically assume things are so much better in the UK?

Do we believe their health care system is better just because the British government reports that it is?

Even so, our advantage in disposable income could easily bridge that gap if we chose to spend it that way.

Debatable. Cheaper, maybe. Better? I doubt it.
Also, the dental care there is awful.
There are a lot of independent studies  done ranking the health care systems of the various developed countries. The United States consistently ranks quite low.

Try it out!  To the tune of My Country, 'Tis of Thee:

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save The Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save The Queen.

Works for me. But I have a feeling a lot of people would not be happy with that as the opening tune for the World Series. On the upside though, we could have Prince Harry do the ceremonial coin toss at the Super Bowl.

Health, equality, manners, culture -- yep, they have it all.

I'm sure some of you guys saw this item when it was published.  I think it was a few weeks ago, and Tyler Cowen may have linked to it.
