My Correspondence with Harry Browne.

Post by portart »

I found a piece of history today. I had Harry Browne personally restructure my portfolio before he passed away.    I have a personal letter from him and all the recommendations for moving my money around into a PP.  I had just about given up looking for it and by chance it showed up in a folder at my workplace. I thought it was in my house which is why I couldn't find it.

It's a very long and personal report. I will cross out my name and publish the first page in a few minutes for all you non believers. When I have time I will go through the other pages with recommendations so everyone can have some rare insight into Harry's thinking.

Can someone guide me on how to attach a scanned page to post here? This is what I get when I push the insert image

Yes, I would love to see anything you feel comfortable sharing.  I read all his books shortly after they each came out and his newsletter from 1980 to 1995.  I never dealt with him personally.

I recommend uploading the image to http://imgur.com/, and then pasting the URL to the image between these tags:

Thanks for sharing, and feel free to omit whatever you're not comfortable with! I hope I didn't come off as too rude. But after such a tantalizing appetizer, you have to admit you have somewhat obligated obligated yourself to provide the main course, wouldn't you say? ;)

I hope this link works so you can see it. I tried it and it works on my computer. I don't know why you can't push a button on this site and attach a page from your desktop.

At the time I hired Harry, I didn't know he would develop a cult following.  I started to do all the stuff he recommended and in the end jumped into PRPFX because it was a bit extensive and complex for me. I made great gains over the following years and survived the crush of the market to averaged 9% a year...pure genius was Harry.

added the image for you...

attaching a page/image directly on the site is likely impossible due to server space issues

Brilliant, portart! I think you brought this up a while ago and it is great to finally see the printout.
This thread should be called something less generic like My Correspondence with Harry Browne.

I'm not sure I still have any of my correspondence with HB, but I may still have the newsletter issue where he mentioned the PP calculation software that I wrote for the TRS-80. This was before spreadsheets...

I had numerous phone conversations with Harry about my portfolio and the philosophy behind the decisions. I questioned him about some of my speculative positions and his take on them and the future which in fact saved me from some losses in selling them in time. He had an amazing insights into how investors think. Interestingly enough, many of his thoughts concerning this are similar to James Dines whose newsletter I subscribe about this subject but not particular companies.

Sounds like Harry was very generous with his time.

Harry was great, a regular guy to talk with. Of course I was  a paying client but I don't think he was out looking for clients. I sought him out after reading his books. I learned a lot from him mostly about gold.

Yeah, I remember that newsletter issue and the software.  Was that was in late 1982 or early 1983?  I looked into buying the software, but didn't for some reason.  If I recall correctly, he mentioned two vendors (depending on your type of computer) -- one in the US and one in Switzerland.  I remember calling and talking to the US vendor.  I think he was in Ohio.

I have the HB newsletters from 1980 to 1995 stuck away somewhere in my attic.  One of these days I'll have to exhume them.
