Re: Stock Picking in the PP
If I recall correctly, in the Money Show radio archives he recommended the S&P 500 fund. Yes, S&P 500 fund for the stock allocation is my recollection from multiple episodes of the radio show. Below is my "strict" interpretation of the Permanent Portfolio philosophy: In October 10, 2004 episode Har...

Re: Best place for cash
For the past decade, I've focused on building up cash reserves in my taxable investment account. Cash was ideal for taxable because it threw off almost no interest and of course had no gains. Whereas, I was preferring to load up my Roth IRA with stocks because of their growth potential. Now the sit...

Re: IRA approved international gold custodians
Hi All, I did a quick search on this forum and did not find much in relation to IRA-approved international gold custodians. Diversification is a good thing and I think that would apply to physical gold held by a custodian internationally for a portion of assets. If anyone has information or referen...

Re: Treasury bond pricing
Why are treasuries priced in $100 increments i.e. 99.730 but sold in $1000 increments? Seems like a bond in this example would be priced at $997.30. I'm sure there is a simple, obvious reason. Per Investopedia at https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/bondquote.asp "A bond quote is the last price at ...

When did this happen? I just learned of this from snedgar in the other thread. This at least feels like lower counter party risk with some higher fees. https://www.fidelity.com/trading/investment-choices/gold-silver-platinum Buying and selling fees: Fees5 Gross amount Percent charged on gross amoun...

Re: Liquidate Some Roth Space to Buy Physical Gold?
I'm sure some wiser people will chime in. I don't know your age or tax situation, but I think I would liquidate something at breakeven in taxable rather than mess with my Roth before I have to, myself. Just my two cents. (Just my two gold slivers). I should have mentioned what I have already in tax...

Re: Treasury Notes (Auction vs Secondary - basically a wash?)
Just for the sake of discussion… I have a T-Bill ladder in my taxable account at Fidelity composed of 3, 6, and 9 month T-Bills, purchased on the secondary market, that I will to hold to maturity. It currently yields about 4.5%-- which is far better than an HBPP-designated Treasury money market fun...

IAUM, iShares "Micro" version of IAU, launched with ER of 0.15%. Not sure when it happened, but ER for IAUM appears to have dropped to 0.09%. Both fund's prospectus list the same sponsor, trustee, and custodian. I'm not aware of a less expensive gold trust currently on the market. IAUM is even chea...

Re: Non-ESG ETFs
You can buy just 1 share (at whatever the stock price is) for most any (every?) stock on the market. Some brokerages allow you to buy fractional shares (Interactive Brokers) where you can spend as little as $25 on each company. Not sure how voting would work though if you own less than a full share...

Re: Non-ESG ETFs
The deeper issue is that BlackRock uses their voting rights (as extremely large holders of any company's stock) to actively pressure the board of every major company to adopt ESG values. That's not about choice. It's about direct political coercion. Tyler's got it. I was blissfully unaware that Van...

Re: Single-bond ETFs
Yes I agree T bills are much better return than any savings account or CD right now. It is hard to believe and I don't quite understand why. I guess banks just don't have the need for further deposits so they don't try to compete. I currently have a mix of SGOV ETF and direct t bills through Fideli...

Re: Corporate Bonds
Taking the other topic on TIPs to corporate bonds, I would be interested in thoughts about whether you'd invest in a Make Whole bond of durations from 37 to 75 years (!!) on companies like Amgen, Waly Disney and Altria. These are paying coupon rates from 6.2 to 8.125% and YTM of 6.2 to 7.3%. These ...

Re: How to save money not part of your portfolio?
Do most PP'ers calculate their asset allocation, and allocate 25/25/25/25 across ALL of their assets? I.e., should I include my 6 months emergency savings in the bank as part of my cash? Or do most keep this separate? I think most consider their emergency fund to be part of their cash allocation. I...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?
Seeing some interesting posts scattered about hinting at this, as well as YouTube videos about macroeconomics in general, that are leading me to question whether the PP only works in times of declining interest rates. We've experienced 40 years of declining interest rates, and this started only sho...

If you're going to store gold overseas, I wouldn't do it in Europe. They aren't as insane as Australia, but they're close. Pick a country that will likely keep some level of protection going forward. That means nothing in the collapsing 'West'. They aren't as insane as Australia . ;D Spot on Pugchi...

Re: Gold storage in Austria
Mark up and storage fees seem like a fair enough deal. My takeaways: This is the Austrian Mint. It appears you must be an EU citizen or permanent resident to open a gold storage account. If you want to sell, the Austrian Mint is not permitted to buy back. Instead you arrange terms and sell to a desi...
