Mountaineer, you got a shine guy?

I am not a moonshine fan. My Scottish/Irish/German heritage does not like corn based liquor. I'm more of a Speyside single malt fan.

Pepperoni rolls. My mom makes them around Christmas time. Imagine a nut roll, but with pepperoni, cheese, peppers and spices instead.

It's a traditional food in Appalachia (like the article mentions). My mom just makes a gastronomical masterpiece (she's from Pittsburgh). The ones you can get in gas stations/grocery stores are the kind where it's more like a stuffed bun, than a true roll. Think this:

The bottom picture is the one I'm familar with. Origin of the pepperoni roll (as I've been taught) was an easy way for coal miners to take a meat/bread lunch in their "bucket". The "bucket" carried water or tea in the bottom and had a tray on top, covered with a lid, for food. Best pepperoni rolls I've ever had were several places, especially my mother-in-law's kitchen, in north central WV.

Agreed. The bottom one is almost entirely bread (with a little pepperoni hiding in the middle).

Agreed. The bottom one is almost entirely bread (with a little pepperoni hiding in the middle).

The rolls with pepper, cheese and sauce are also very good - just not original. The original is preferred by the coal miners so they can better enjoy their dessert.

That's absolutely true, if I was a coal miner, and I couldn't afford a lunch box, I'd go with the bottom one.

We call them hot pockets and they’re in the freezer section at Safeway. Haha.

Hot pockets are praised by pool sharks. Rolls are preferred by Mountaineers, British royalty, and sheiks.

I guess of the 3 listed i would hang out with the Mountaineers. My kids love hot pockets and they can’t play pool yet.
