Google Docs is moribund

It will be replaced by Sync & Backup. Boo! I don't know exactly what this entails and whether it will affect Google Sheets.
I don't even really have something for making fancy docs, e.g. Word or Pages, or spreadsheets on my computer. I do everything in Google Docs & Sheets. Before that, HTML from scratch, and Excel.

If it *does* affect Sheets, what are you going to use for tracking your portfolio?

This won't happen until sometime in 2018, so you have some time to think about it.

Just to be clear, we're talking about Drive desktop app going away, not the web apps.

I assumed this only affected how files are synced between Google Drive and your PC, as some kind of local backup or offline access. I don't think this affects Sheets in the browser/cloud or people would be talking about the world ending. Do you otherwise work with Sheets documents on your PC?

Ok, I was also wondering why people weren't talking about the world ending.

I only use the web form of these products, even though I get harassed (as do you) to get the app when I access them from a tablet.
Well, this is great news. Sometimes I have to post to find out, I guess.
Thanks!

Pug: I set my dad up with that since he got tired of buying & updating Excel. actually, I set him up with Google drive, but he also wanted something offline for thumb drives. Nice suite of applications that libre office.

Anyone know how this will affect Chrome OS/Chromebooks? I was thinking of getting one, and a huge plus was to be able to work on offline spreadsheets. If this is going away, then I may reconsider.

Meanwhile, someone reported on another forum that Google finance is being rewritten and they are axing the portfolios feature. I do use that! I figured they'd ax the whole product, but no, just the more complicated feature I actually use.

If we ever do lose the web-based stuff and i have to use libre office, I guess I'd spring for NAS or Mac Server as well. It's down to US$20 and no special hardware, though.

@Sir B, I would think a Chromebook would be fine since the consensus is that the web apps will be left alone. I plan to get one, too, so I can play with Gallium OS.
