IoT- The Internet of Things

Today on the site CBSmarketwatch.com, the topic "The Internet of Everything" is discussed in a column by Maciej Kranz.

I've seen this topic before but not seen discussed here. Is IoT trivial in the Grand Plan and covered nicely in buying VTI? Shold an SCV fund be considered (thanks, Tyler) in a variable Portfolio?

Thanks.

Maybe I need to clarify my thought: What is IoT?

Thanks.

Just think sensors. Anything that can be monitored can have wifi bolted on and get you that data.

--electricity use
--thermostats
--cameras
--alarm system status
--mail in the mailbox
--garage door open or closed

...and so on.

There is not one specific company that I am aware of to take advantage of this, it is going to be a conglomeration of semiconductor companies and consumer electronics mfgs. So I think VTI would cover it.

I would hesitate to try to invest directly in these sectors, say semiconductors, since the main mantra of IoT is low cost. There may be a lot of these devices out there, but the Si cost in each is very small, compared, say, to an x86 processor.

Also, from the little I've seen, since these are low cost items, within a couple months of something being released, there are multiple, cheaper copies from the far east.

Thanks.

That's what I was looking for. Could this be some promotional hype? Glad that VTI is there.

IMO, it is just a latest buzzword. But I would agree that more and more of our world will be sensored going forward. Too much information will become even more.

IoT devices are useless, poorly made insecure POS. When theyre not spewing your private data to some dodgy server in China, theyre harnessed in some botnet DDoSing the entire interwebz.

Probably best considered as a contrarian play ;)
