Zero Poaching

[quote=
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/air- ... -poaching/]Others have tried and not succeeded, but our Air Shepherd approach is the only intervention that has been shown to literally stop poaching. We have demonstrable proof that our drone program works. Quietly developed and tested in southern Africa for over two years with US$ 2 million in investment and over 1000 hours of flying time, we can now say one thing with confidence: where we fly, the poaching stops. Completely.
We’ve also teamed up with University of Maryland mathematicians who have developed the world’s most effective supercomputer-based capability for predicting where poachers will be each night. They invented the capability to predict where roadside bombs would be placed in Iraq and Afghanistan – with over 93% accuracy. Now they’ve applied that pattern recognition to poaching.
We know exactly where to fly – with a very high probability of getting there before the poachers. There is no other capability that even comes close to this.
It's the combination of carefully tested drone operations and predictive analysis that provides us with a huge advantage over any other approach to stopping poaching in Africa.[/quote]

Awesome. I just happened to be looking at this -
http://nypost.com/2015/03/13/drunk-man- ... pled/ (article only; video is not worth it) but what you posted is much better.
Btw, the recently deceased Sam Simon, co-creator of
The Simpsons, left a lot of his fortune to elephant liberation. He used to buy entire circuses to free the animals.

That's pretty cool! I think we're in the minority around here in terms caring, though. Animal welfare posts get 30 or less views.

Cool drone application. Anything to help fight poaching is A-OK with me.

I see Air Shepherd made Kurzweil AI this week. I'm going to get in on this. Hope they spend the money wisely.

Any chance of adapting this to predicting terrorist strikes in high risk areas? Like Kenya...

Very interesting integration of air/ground resources to manage this problem.
Although I wonder if the interestingly named computer guy, Tom Snitch, Ph.D., is a real person.
(he is, according to Google).

There's a guy who would never survive a stint in jail. He and Ira Toneveryone.

To add a moment of levity to the discussion, I used to be a billionaire, but now am only a lowly millionaire .... someone poached my zeros.

There is one. It is the ultimate obamaisanarcissistjustaskmeandiwilltellyouhowstupidyouareandhowsmartiambecasueidupedthemasses virus.
As for the article, I disagree with the first sentence: "We have known the elephants, the greatest land mammal of them all" which seems to be another tree hugger emotional pull on the heart strings statement by those who think humans are a virus to be exterminated.
I think humans are the greatest land mammal of them all. And I do like elephants and do not think they should be needlessly slaughtered.

Maybe the author just meant the biggest.

Fyi got an email today from the anti-poacher drone folks saying that they don't yet have permission to fly the things.

"AirShepherd is ready to fly . . . but the bureaucrats aren’t quite ready. On about the day that we were signing the paperwork that would get our first team in the air in KwaZulu Natal, the South African Civil Aviation Authority continued a restriction on all drone flights in the country until they had published their new drone operation regulations. So we had to wait for a number of weeks for that process to be completed. Now the first of July has been set as the date when flying can commence under the new rules.
While waiting on South Africa we were actively pursuing other alternatives. Dr. Tom Snitch from our team met with the ambassadors of Zambia and Namibia recently and was strongly encouraged to initiate the process of bringing Air Shepherd teams to those countries very soon."

That reminds me of the twin brothers Malcolm Gladwell wrote about named Winner and Loser Lane.
Winner Lane is in prison after a long career as a petty criminal.
Winner's brother Loser Lane is a police detective. His friends know him as "Lou."

Fuck me. And we really care what
Wag the Dog bullshit is used to save animals or people in need? It's the principle that counts, not the justification.
I sure hope China extends execution to animal abusers some day. But maybe that's too kind.
