It's a miracle humans will trade anything for slips of worthless paper that are counterfeited daily. It's all about confidence in the guys with the guns, hence, a con!

And as I pointed out later in the thread, EXACTLY THE SAME arguments apply to BRK (Berkshire Hathaway) stock. So is that not an investment either?

Thanks! By the way, yes, you can indeed eat gold, although it's pretty stupid (if only because expensive) to do so.

Gold is used to treat arthritis.  Injected, though, I think.

I can only add that its far more likely that I'll be heating my home by burning dollars than eating a gold coin!

Not that I'm expecting the dollar to crash tomorrow, but the dollar has lost 97% of its value in the last 100 years, while gold has not lost any value, and in fact by some measures may be worth more now.  Anyone who has looked at the history of paper currency can see that its value always declines (inflation), whereas gold has maintained its value across thousands of years.

I could make the case that gold is not a great "investment" in the sense that its value does not grow or provide dividends.  However, but it is a good store of value, especially in times of trouble.

I'm open to engaging in an intelligent debate with Gold naysayers, but to hear the same old regurgitated excuses (like "you can't eat gold") leaves me quite disheartened.
