Linked In

I joined Linked In a few months ago because I had read about what a great company it was on The Motley Fool website.  I was thinking it might be variable portfolio material.

So far, all I get are annoying emails.  Today I got one asking if I wanted to upgrade to their premium service.

Seems pretty lame so far.  Am I missing something?

Why don't you give me your linkedin ID, that way we can connect and I can endorse your skills. Then you'll be reminded fifty times that "Jan endorsed you for 2 skills", and you'll be supposed to endorse me too! Who cares you don't know me...

Exactly.

Agreed.  I get 1-2 messages from recruiters a month through Linkedin, so it's a solid job-searching tool.

It's also handy as a sales tool, as I can generally quickly dig up personal histories on potential clients calling us up.  And the Groups area is a decent spot to find professional message boards that interest you.

I haven't gotten any jobs through it (because I haven't tried) but it does seem to be a good way to contact people for those reasons.

Most annoying of all about Linked In is that when you sign up, "apparently" they break into your computer's address list, send messages to *everyone* with whom you've ever corresponded, presenting them with a message *in your name* asking them to "link up" with you.

Linked In denies that they do this, but it sure as hell happened to me.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

That only happens if you click the button that does that.  However, it sometimes just pops up upon login and it's not immediately clear what is going to happen when you click it.  Happens to lots of people.
