Good Movie Recommendations

Post by Tortoise »

I couldn't remember if there was already a thread for this. If so, one of the mods can feel free to merge this with that thread.

My first movie recommendation is Groundhog Day. I rented it the other day because it came to my attention that Harold Ramis, who wrote and directed the movie, passed away earlier this year.

It's probably been years since I've seen a film with such a well-written screenplay (it won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay), and to my surprise--despite it being a funny Hollywood romantic comedy on the surface--at its core it's a redemption story that explores some fairly profound themes that one could say even touch on the theological.

Another Earth is a movie that's a couple of years old.  It's a very unique film, and I don't think many people saw it, but I really liked it.  Great ending.

Here's the trailer.  2 mins.

Puzzlehead is another great sci fi flick that no one knows about.  Also unique.  It was filmed just a few years back, but the cinematography makes it look like something from the '70s, which adds just the right amount of eeriness.

Also...Love Groundhog Day!  One of my favorites.

"Her"

Won the Oscar for best original screenplay last year.

And I abhor relationship movies. This one was absolutely brilliant though.

Another movie I'd recommend is Glengarry Glen Ross, from way back in 1992.  It's a bit dark, and contains a lot of swearing, but I found it to be very humorous.

The Fisher King by Terry Gilliam

Indescribably wonderful movie with Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.  Not at all dark like Brazil.
It was good being the party of Robin Hood. Until they morphed into the Sheriff of Nottingham

Hah! I hadn't thought about that movie in a long time.  I remember enjoying it.

A few others that were of the same vein (low budget, small release, kind of odd) that this one reminds me of (probably because they all came out when I was in my first year of grad school) and that I liked:

Repo Man (1984)

Luggage of the Gods (1983)

Stranger Than Paradise (1984)
i just added "Luggage of the Gods " and "Stranger Than Paradise" to my watch list,  some of those old, low budget, off beat movies are the best..

We're just speaking about this, as an idea.  We're not actually talking about it.

Bottle Rocket (Owen and Luke Wilson's first movie--great Keystone Cops-style caper film)

Evil Dead II (Sam Raimi before he became a celebrity director and Bruce Campbell's finest performance)

White Chicks (makes me laugh every time I watch it)

Midnight Run (overlooked but very solid De Niro film)

Moon (outstanding Sam Rockwell performance)
