Big Mickey is Watching

The answer was on the electronic bands the couple wore on their wrists. That’s the magic of the MyMagic+, Walt Disney’s (DIS) $1 billion experiment in crowd control, data collection, and wearable technology that could change the way people play—and spend—at the Most Magical Place on Earth. If the system works, it could be copied not only by other theme parks but also by museums, zoos, airports, and malls. “It’s a complete game changer,”? says Douglas Quinby, vice president for research at PhoCusWright, a travel consulting firm.

Instead of "working for the Man", Disney employees say that the are "working for the Mouse."

Yes, very creepy when the telemarketers address you by your name... but less so when they bungle it which often happens with mine (last name more than the first).

It reminds me of the pervasive future adverts in, often dystopic, sci-fi movies where you walk past the advertisement and it changes to a picture of you or says your name.

The future is now.

I go by my middle name, so I always know when someone who doesn't know me is trying to make it seem like they do because they ask for me by my first name.

The one thing that seems to be missing from a lot of these big data "customer service" efforts is a basic respect for the customer--i.e., not treating them like a cow on a feed lot.

Technology driven imagineering BS, there's no underlying problem being solved here.

My Disney 'experience' consisted of toe curling unease that I endured for the sake of the kids.

Planning ahead for months, having some random stranger call my kids by their first name and the ability buy tat with the wave of a hand is pretty much the antithesis of my needs.

If they were touting Diazepam coated wristbands I'd be more inclined to believe they were thinking the experience through from the customers point of view.

Or perhaps a tiny fast acting dose of LSD for the adults before some of the more exciting attractions.

When you got back home and people asked how your trip went, you might find the question surprisingly difficult to answer.

My first wife was a Disney lover so I've been there more times than I care to admit. When she died my kids sprinkled her ashes over Lake Buena Vista so she could rest in peace at the happiest place on earth.

It wasn't so bad when we had annual passes and could just go and spend a few hours at a time. Anybody who has to spend the whole day to get their money's worth has my complete sympathy. The last time I did that was with some relatives who had small kids. It was a hot day under the Florida sun and all they wanted to do was stand in line to get autographs from the Disney Characters. That was my last visit but unfortunately we have another family with kids coming to visit this summer. Hopefully I will have to work that day.
