Entertainment Surfeit Disorder

Being home sick for the last five days has helped me to realize I might be suffering from this disorder.....

As for my patients who were bored and who created convoluted difficulties for themselves to disguise that fact, I came to the conclusion that the world seemed dull and slow moving to them by comparison with videos, films, shows, and television. The greatest cause of boredom in the modern world is entertainment.

I often think this is why the younger generation is so impatient, although maybe simply being the younger generation has something to do with it.

I certainly think there's something to this.  It should come as no surprise that people raised in the age of the internet will have trouble entertaining themselves for any amount of time.  Even older generations suffer from this -- the next time you go to the store observe how many people are checking their work email on their smartphones.  So I'd perhaps expand the problem beyond "entertainment" to something broader like "instant access to new information."  People don't take the time to think and observe anymore, and struggle when the junk external stimuli are taken away.
