Synthetic Gold?

I don’t know if this is a stupid question or not but Can Gold be synthetically made? What if it could ? I’ve read one the internet that it would be technologically too expensive to do so, but what if one day it could be made? What would the possible scenorios be for existing bullion holders? Would price plummet? Where would sellers of gold park their money? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas on this?

thanks

You can create it through fusion of lighter elements.  I'm not sure if humans have ever done so.

edit: I'm guessing it's cheaper to sent robots to mine asteroids.

I suppose the real question is whether there could be any other store of value that has the same characteristics of gold that central banks could turn to , and turn to pretty quickly. Yes Gold has been currency for 5000+ years and all the central banks hold it which is reason enough to hold it, but i still feel nervous about holding it exclusively to protect against inflation - it feels like i would be putting all my eggs in one basket and i would be counting on it to protect me against inflation. It has done so historically, but can the link be broken i wonder....

Gold isn't exclusively for protecting against inflation. It's also useful for protecting you against negative real interest rates--which, in a way, are a form of inflation, but a more subtle one.

You also hold stocks to provide a measure of inflation protection. They can do okay with there's light to moderate amounts of it.

I have bad news and good news.

The bad news is that if this happened we would be in a lot of trouble because we would no longer have a hedge against government insanity.

The good news is that it is VERY unlikely to happen, at least any time in the lifetime of anyone on this forum.

Yes, it is possible today and people have done it.

However, the cost required to do so vastly outpaces the value of the gold produced, so it's more science project than business plan.

Yes, I meant as a practical matter, it is impractical.  :P

Yes, I have the formula to synthesize gold! For the formula, just send a certified check for $10,000,000 to my Nigerian bank account.

(Just kidding)  ;D :)

appreciate the response guys :)

given that global central banks store gold as value in their vaults, i would imagine that even if it were remotely viable at some stage that they would find a way of confiscating or nationalizing the technological process for doing so  :)
