Anyone else following DDD? It's been doing very well. Not just today, but for a long time now.

It's up 113% this year so I'll wait until it shows a little more upward momentum.

I bought some about 4 months ago, along with SSYS and DASTY (all 3D printing companies).
I put them in an account separate from all my other investments. My plan is to forget I own them for the next 10 years. I'm optimistic about the technology.

Same here, Adam- late June. I don't own those other two, though.
In the future, when we have "deconstructors" as well as printers, will people be running around stealing raw materials, e.g. clipping chain link fences, to feed their printers at home? Will people with land hoard scrap metal?

Probably. And people will pay others for their worthless plastic crap.

SSYS is 3Ds biggest competitor. DASTY writes most of the 3D printing software.
I bought all three with a small amount of money (after very little research) on the speculation that 3D printing will eventually become a household technology.

I can see the Cash4Plastic ads in my mind's eye already.

DDD is on a tear. Are they using these printers to print money or something?

Damn, I should have held on to my shares I bought in 2011.
That would have been cool.

Today was not

though. Down 25% intraday and closing 15% lower. Shares from 2011- I guess they'd still be doing fine. :-)

I don`t understand why people buy stocks without looking at the fundamentals. DDD was a piece of hot air and one look at the numbers would have been enough to know that. Perhaps its worth 20$ a share but surely not more.

I have never bought a stock without looking at the fundamentals, but I have gone ahead and nibbled at stocks with poor fundamentals. That's almost the definition of speculation. Why do it? Because I can sell it at a higher price to another speculator (or someone who truly hasn't looked at the fundamentals). I wouldn't replace my pp or Boglehead portfolios with this stuff, but so far so good, this massive drop notwithstanding.
(And yes, I have bought stocks just before a plunge which are still down).

You are in good company man. Everyone who has bought more than a few individual stocks has bought some before they plunged.
Now I only buy them after a huge plunge following another plunge.

My very techie son just got a 3D printer. It is hand made. I watched him use it. Awesome!

Yes, and assembled by hand! For example:

Note: I am not necessarily endorsing the Tantillus printer, but it sure does show off the concept of a 3D printer with a lot of 3D printed components!

Stratasys (SSYS) also not in great shape:
Weaker Earnings Leads to Class Action Lawsuit for Stratasys
This Tuesday, Stratasys announced that their Q4 earnings were going to fall short of their previous forecast and that their Q5 estimates would be lower than expected, as well. In turn, the law firm Robbins, Geller and Rubin slapped the industry leader with a lawsuit, alleging that the company had inflated its 2014 projections and violated rules imposed by the Security and Exchange Commission.
The link says they've had to take a big loss on their Makerbot acquisition. I'm not surprised. Makerbot was always more sizzle than substance. My first printer was one of theirs and it was a real clunker. I was so disgusted with it that I wound up building my own machine for half the price that was faster and could print larger things at a higher quality.

Uh-oh. That's definitely what you don't want to hear when thinking of 3D printers.
