Gyroscopic Investing

Ikeas build your own furniture niche is pretty familiar to most people, but I was surprised to see that it has spread to other items. For example, I was researching Cajon drums with the idea of buying one. On the lower end they go for around 100 dollars, however this one company (Meinl) is advertising a build it yourself kit for half that much. http://www.amazon.com/Meinl-MYOCAJ-Make ... B00BS2HLVK

This got me thinking, maybe "build it yourself" is another avenue for companies to rid themselves of pesky laborers by turning the consumer into factory workers and our homes into the factories. With some basic instructions most items could be easily assembled I think. Eventually consumers could have two choices, already assembled and build it yourself for just about everything.....

In my experience, most build-it-yourself furniture is crap quality, disposible junk made of plastic-coated chipboard that damages easily and won't survive the first move.

Needless to say, I expect stuff like this to gain in popularity. Meanwhile, I expect that fully-assembled higher-quality stuff will skyrocket in price. At least that's the trend I've observed in the Bay Area furniture stores. Anything not Ikea is $500 or more. They sell molded plastic chairs in an "artistic" (term used loosely) style for more than the cost of a computer.

Then again I just saw that that ridiculous place is going out of business.
