The indictment also noted that Ulbricht and Dread Pirate Roberts were both vocal adherents of the libertarian theories of Austrian School economist Ludwig von Mises, with Ulbricht's public Google+ account linking to YouTube videos posted by the Ludwig von Mises Institute, and Dread Pirate Roberts repeatedly crediting von Mises with "providing the philosophical underpinnings for Silk Road."
Kind of reminds me of Gale in Breaking Bad, but more ambitious.

I wonder how a person can justify hit men (murder for hire), with a libertarian philosophy (live and let live).

I think the media provided us with a bit of disinformation about Silk Road, as per usual. According to Wikipedia,
'The site's terms of service had said that they prohibited the sale of "anything who's [sic] purpose is to harm or defraud."[14] This included child pornography, stolen credit cards, assassinations and weapons of mass destruction.'
The stated purpose of the market, then, did not include hit men for hire, although maybe some of that did occur anyway.
