I just noticed the First Spouse Uncirculated Coins and I wanted to ask if these are considered PP eligible gold. I wasn't familiar with these before just now, and wanted to know more about how the series might fit into a PP.

If they're gold and trade near spot price, they're fine.

On most of the obverse designs you are quite right.  Although most of the "bachelor" presidents designs do use classic coin designs that are not bad.

They are occasionally within 5% of spot on the Bay.  Not bad for US Mint-issued fractional gold.

are the versions available for purchase on the US Mint website considered PP eligible gold? I know that they are "collector" versions, (does this distinction matter, from a gold perspective?) what I guess I am unclear about is how the versions available directly on the website fit into the PP. I don't recall this addressed in the PP book, but perhaps I am mistaken. Thanks again

Any gold that's close to melt is PP eligible. Doesn't much matter where it comes from, as long as it comes from a reputable dealer. Gold is gold. PP mandates cheap gold. That's about it

My vote for the ugliest would probably go to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Larshus is right; what we're really after is the metal itself, specifically NOT any collectibility.  Collectibility can come and go unpredictably, and isn't at all part of the currency hedge that gold itself is.

I would recommend that if you must buy a collectible coin, consider only the value of the metal to be part of your PP, and the rest to be VP.  That may be a lot of work to track, in which case I would recommend buying a coin that's more purely a gold play and not collectible.

FDR's mistress should get one, except maybe it could be made out of tungsten.

There should also be one with a large crowd of women on it, and it could commemorate JFK's dalliances.

The Clinton commemorative coin is a challenge.  Maybe the 1992-2000 coin could show Hillary Clinton chasing three or four women out of the White House with a broom.  Later on, if Bill Clinton becomes the "First Man", his coin could show him chasing those same three or four women back into the White House.

They might have to pay Marilyn Monroe's estate on that one, believe it or not.

I'm picturing Bill Clinton and Joe Biden riding around in Joe Biden's Trans Am picking up chicks at truck stops in Maryland with a Suburban full of Secret Service guys following them. 

The Suburban would, however, have to follow at a safe enough distance not to get hit in the windshield by any condoms that might be thrown from the Trans Am's t-tops.

What you're talking about sounds more like something from the First Ho series.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the depiction of Michelle Obama's powerful hindquarters on the First Centaur coins.

The Eleanor first spouse coin will be out in late 2014.  I think the competition for the ugliest will be fierce when the series finally wraps up in 2016.

Of course MediumTex, since you are from Texas, I'm sure you know why Mrs. Johnson was called "Lady Bird".
