Sharpe, Sortino, etc.; Standard Deviation or simply CAGR - which to use?

What are Sortino, Sharpe, Omega, etc. ratios? Sure, I can look them up on the Internet but found too complicated. Are they useful at all or just add unnecessary levels of complications?

Craig only uses CAGR as a simple measure without standard deviation but is it enough? I don't know. https://web.archive.org/web/20160324133 ... l-returns/

I find it nice and useful to add a 2nd dimension next to CAGR, namely, standard deviation, so we can plot portfolios on the risk:reward chart but maybe I am wrong? http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/pe ... r-hogwash/
