Immigrant Riots in Sweden

Immigrant assimilation seems to be a real issue, especially when the immigrants come from much less-developed nations with historically more tribal-based cultures and religions.
The whole "cultural melting pot" idea seems great from an idealistic perspective, because it evokes beautiful images of all sorts of different people holding hands and singing "Kumbaya" together, but what seems to happen in practice is that if the cultures in the melting pot are too different, then assimilation becomes difficult and creates tension.
Also, some cultures specifically take pride in not assimilating, since that more effectively preserves their culture and identity. When that is the case, does the very idea of "cultural melting pot" even make sense?
