Please Tone It Down

Esteemed Members,
I'm all for people talking about anything they want to talk about here with almost no moderator interference (subject to occasional enforcement of forum rules where necessary).
However, this "low mod" approach only works if people are willing to be cordial and respectful in their discussions. Otherwise, it just turns into a noisy mess. I don't want that here.
I'm reading more and more posts and threads here where there just seems to be a bad vibe, and I don't want that to infect our nice forum here.
Please be respectful in dealing with one another.
I'm not telling anyone what to post or what to discuss. I'm just asking everyone to cool out a bit in some of these discussions of controversial topics.
Thank you.

Please remember that we have a lot of bright people here that will hold strong opinions and they are not all going to agree with each other. Also politically, we have people all over the map that read these forums. The loss of facial expressions and other non-verbal communication in Internet communication can make it exceedingly easy to get more upset than the poster intended. Likewise, it's easy to write something upsetting that you would never say directly to that person if they were in front of you. This is just a reality of typing on keyboards and not interacting face-to-face. Please keep this in mind.
Tex and I moderate this forum part-time and cannot read all the things posted and judge them for content. Nor, do we want to. We really need everyone's help to tone it down.
In particular, the rules established for political discussions were posted here:

Tex owns the place and sets the rules. From my perspective I'd like to think that everyone here can keep the conversations focused and cordial. And yes, I've been as guilty as others at times so I'll apologize right now for it.

As one of the more snarky members here, I concur and apologize.
To Reub, Libertarian666, clacy, PointedStick, MG, Craig, Rural Engineer, AgAu, budd, Ad Orientum, and even doodle with your damn deficit hawkery from back in the day.
My apologies for the times I've stepped well-over the line and taken a low road to try to make a point.
Anyone else I've poked a condescending remark at I apologize to as well.

In particular, please refrain from talking about killing politicians or celebrating the death of political figures. That rarely moves any discussion forward and sometimes can get your forum the wrong kind of attention.
I honestly just want to make this forum a durable place.

I wonder if there is any trend to the ideology of the instigating party. Machine ghost, do you have any charts or analyses on this subject?

LOL! I was actually thinking about the biorhythms of the forum and how it is related to the risk-taking effects of the spring equinox. We get out of control eventually and coercive moderators have to step in to restore order. It's yet another nail in the coffin for anarchy.

Each member here is like one cell in a complex organism. Each cell experiences on a microcosmic level what is going on with the entire organism. The rhythms saturate every thread of the fabric. Any sense of independence at the cellular level is mere delusion, though often a comforting and reassuring one.
Perhaps the forum will deliver a baby around late January of next year and we will all realize that we were acting wild because the forum was in heat.

Remember that episode where the Enterprise had a baby? That was an only slightly less ridiculous idea. :-)

Yes, the interdependent nature of reality....try bringing that topic up at a libertarian cocktail party though.

....Maybe you can expound on the "any sense of independence at the cellular level is mere delusion" bit, because its a point that I have been trying to insert into many discussions here when I bring up the paradox of independence in a symbiotic universe.
I also apologize for any ad hominem attacks over the last few months or innapropriate personal jabs. The people here have been a great sounding board for my thoughts and musings and I consider all of you friends despite our many disagreements. I think it always helps to take yourself and your ego out of the argument and argue passionately but with a sense of personal detachment from your ideas.....of course this is easier said than done.
