Primer is a 2004 American science fiction drama film about the accidental discovery of a means of time travel. The film was written, directed, and produced by Shane Carruth and was completed on a budget of $7,000.[2] Carruth graduated from college with a degree in mathematics and is a former engineer.[3] Primer is of note for its extremely low budget, experimental plot structure, philosophical implications, and complex technical dialogue, which Carruth chose not to simplify for the sake of his audience. One reviewer said that "anybody who claims he fully understands what's going on in Primer after seeing it just once is either a savant or a liar."[4] The film collected the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2004 before securing a limited release in the United States, and has since gained a cult following

It's a great movie, IMO, but the ending is maddening.  Was just wondering if anyone else had seen it and had opinions.

Curious to know what you think about it.  The dialogue is great, IMO.

i saw it a long time ago so i don't remember it well, i would have to re-watch it to give a better review, but i remember it as having very well done "twisty time travel story". it is one of my favorite genres, and one that big budget movies have a hard time doing right, they tend to loose the sci-fi "realty's" of time travel in favor of special effects and explosions/action, this one doesn't....

I think that I may have a double who hasn't yet seen the film.  I am frantically trying to figure out a way to go back in time 18 hours or so and delete this thread before anyone sees it and tell AdamA that such threads violate a forum policy that I will put into place right before I PM him.

That was a really good film.

That movie was made in North Dallas. The Richardson Public library, and UTD feature prominently in location shots.

I recently watched it again.

Some of the fan-folk have constructed complex charts and graphs of all the different time lines.

It provides a much more satisfying treatment of closed time-like loops than the TV series Fringe. Fringe ended up in a self contradicting muddle. I watched Fringe mainly to see Anna Torv. The acting was quite good, though, as was the dialog.

I guess it never occurred to the writers of Fringe that if the Watchers never came, no one would have saved Peter from drowning as a boy, thus no happy ending with Olivia, Peter, and baby Etta.

More than the story's great writing and great acting, I thought that the overall effect the movie had was pretty cool in creating what felt for a few hours like a loosened grip on reality and the possibilities that exist beyond this tight wrapper of time and space that we inhabit.

By the time I went to bed last night, though, the time/space wrapper felt like it was once again snugly encasing me.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just watched this movie last night. And again this morning. And will probably watch it for a 3rd time tomorrow. What a mind-bender. Figured I'd come here and search for "primer" to see if it had been discussed. Not surprised it has its own thread.

Naturally I turned to the internet to find some interpretations and analysis of the plot and stumbled upon a great summary that I'd not read until you've watched the movie at least once: http://qntm.org/primer

Anyhoo, I thought I'd resurrect this thread in case anyone was looking for an excellent way to spend a spare 77 minutes. It does not currently stream on Netflix US, but if you use one of the region switchers to access European Netflix content, you'll find it there. It's also streaming on Hulu Plus but without subtitles (which I found extremely helpful).
