Future Austerity Measures In The US

While watching austerity measures and subsequent protests in Greece and Europe over recent times, I've frequently said two things:
1) It's the inevitable result of socialism - free healthcare, guaranteed retirement benefits, et al, ain't sustainable.
2) If those protests happened in the US, for example, slashing social security benefits, slashing medicare, slashing obamafone, etc., things would be significantly bloodier here because the US has guns, whereas Europe has been disarmed for a while.
Now I'm wondering if the socialists in the US are starting to realize, "Oh S---, we might have to implement austerity measures when our house of cards collapses and we better get rid of private gun ownership before then."
No, I didn't hear it on Alex Jones or Glenn Beck. Just my original thoughts.
