I think 2013 is going to be the year of prepper comedies.



That's not to say I don't like guns, gold or canned corned beef hash. I'm all in favor of those.

The Tremors films, Joe Versus the Volcano and Blast From the Past are three that come to mind.

Not a film, but the Y2K episode of King of the Hill was pretty great.

Those all sound very familiar -- well King of the Hill I know very well -- but I thought Joe vs the Volcano was really about a guy getting thrown into a volcano! I'll have to revisit that one.

I haven't seen Tremors, altho I've seen references to it here.
I want to write a script with a character like John Goodman's in 'The Big Lebowski'.

It was, but it also had some nice scenes of buying prepping gear, dealing with some personal SHTF, and overall I enjoyed the way he geared up to face an unknown challenge after what he perceived to be a very boring and uneventful life.

Burt Gummer is so much better as a mythic figure than actually watching and being underwhelmed.

maybe i understood the Burt Gummer caricature wrong....  but i saw it as a well done, playful, humorous and somewhat self depreciating (b movie) take on the survivalist gun nut...    did i miss something?

No, I think the problem is he's just not as amusing in the sequels.  It gets predictably old rather than continuing to being novel.

I'm with MG on this.  The first Tremors was fresh and funny, the second was kind of tedious.  I stopped after two.

An interesting aspect of the original, in light of the popularity of prepperdom today, is how un-prepared they all were for their fictitious  SHTF event.

no disagreement that the movies got progressively worse after the first one,  I maybe wasn't as disappointed in that because i watched the others more as a "B movie fan" and was expecting them to be bad as part of the charm...
