From the article:
"The USS Eisenhower Strike Group transited the Suez Canal from the Persian Gulf Saturday, Dec. 1, sailing up to the Syrian coast Tuesday in a heavy storm, with 8 fighter bomber squadrons of Air Wing Seven on its decks and 8,000 sailors, airmen and Marines.
The USS Eisenhower group joins the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group which carries 2,500 Marines.
Facing Syria now are 10,000 US fighting men, 70 fighter-bombers and at least 17 warships, including the three Iwo Jima amphibious craft, a guided missile cruiser and 10 destroyers and frigates.
Four of these vessels are armed with Aegis missile interceptors."

I'm not sure that's necessary. At this point Turkey would probably invade in a heartbeat if NATO told them they could keep some territory or install a puppet regime. Syria would get smoked by Turkey.

It's really interesting seeing those carriers cruise around depending on what is happening in the world. If I recall we only have a dozen of them, so where we decide to place them really says a lot.
It's kind of like a country's equivalent of body language. Same goes for "testing" nuclear bombs (I think we know that they work). Nothing starts off a negotiation like making a section of the earth uninhabitable for the next couple of decades.

They could be seen as floating diplomats too.

I know we've been fooled by the threat of chemical weapons before, but Sarin bombs -- that gives me goosebumps.

The rebels most likely. I'm sure he knows attacking Turkey or Israel would be suicide.

Correct.
