Here are two very useful Calorie Control Guides (PDFs) for men and women. Using pictures, they illustrate that a protein serving is a palm, a veggie is a fist, extra carbs is a cupped hand and extra fat is a thumb. Very easy to remember and you can't get any more dumbed down than that!
