Smartphone idea

The more I read about smartphones, the more I realize I don't know much of anything about the consumer side. It's pretty shameful really, considering that I work on one for my day job! :p

So here's an idea I'd like to get feedback on: get an Android smartphone capable of downloading apps and use a Google Talk app for free calls while on WiFi networks, and use prepaid minutes while on the cell network. Does this sound feasible? Are there any pas-as-you-go data plans out there?

You could just get an iPod touch and use Skype on wifi to make calls.  Granted, you'd only be able to make calls on wifi networks, but you get all of the same apps that iPhone users have.

Most smartphones block VOIP in the US..  although I'm not sure if you can get around that by rooting/jailbreaking.

I've been eying this plan: Walmart Family Mobile. "Unlimited" talk, text and web for $45 first line, $35 each next line. Unlimited because they can throttle your usage if you really go crazy.
This plan combined with something like a Google Nexus phone seems like a great option to me.

btw, Google Voice can't do voip. Though I think there are some apps to make that kinda possible. Otherwise, you'll always be using plan minutes using GV, which isn't a problem anyway on the family mobile plan...
