I see this as not really a bad sign. I would think that with so many more stop loss trades and computers running everything there is much more of a chance of flash crashes. With tighter controls hopefully that could mitigate some of the sudden drops. Or I could be totally wrong. Either way.

I find that comment sad, comical, and comforting that I don't really have to "care" an enormous amount of things such as this. From a Variable Portfolio which is weighted towards stocks a bit than maybe. In general though, no.

Well, to me it's not so much about not caring. It's more about embracing the idea that the future is unknowable. And even if you might know what is going to happen, you don't necessarily know when, and you don't necessarily know how the markets will react to whatever event it is that you're envisioning. Once you embrace that, then the comfort of having a portfolio that will respond well to all economic conditions begins to grow. I think it also makes you a better speculator because you tend to appreciate the risks a lot more and can make arrangements to mitigate them.
