That's pretty wild.

I haven't paid any attention to platinum. What's the "normal" spread?

There is nothing normal in the world of investing, but over the last 15 years or so platinum has always been higher than gold, sometimes quite a bit higher.

There is no magic relationship between the two, but I would say that platinum looks like a buy right now for someone who likes platinum.

I definitely agree there is nothing normal; thus the quotes.  Is it really that much rarer?  I guess I'll just have to do some research.  Now you have me curious to know more.

What was platinum at (excuse my grammar) when gold was at 1800 an ounce?

Typically platinum is higher, but I believe it did dip below gold around that time.

Note that counterfeit British gold sovereigns were made of platinum at one time (late 1800s) since platinum is somewhat close to gold's density.  Undoubtedly platinum was cheaper than gold at that time.  Pre-catalytic converters. :)
