Graphing from Spreadsheet Data

I have been following your forum for a while now and am very encouraged by what I read. A very high quality forum.
I have noticed how many of the posters have included some fantastic graphics - presumably made from Excel data.
Some time ago I came across an article with great graphing and at the end the author was giving credit to his software, that could access data directly from the spreadsheet and also overlay graphs and set the start points to match. At the time I did visit the www of the software and recall it costing $30-60. It had a short name (it certainly wasn't mainstream) like XJ3. However, foolishly I made no note of the name and now cannot find it despite numerous contorted searches.
I use OpenOffice as a spreadsheet and the graphing is lamentable? What are other using to produce such great results?
