Vinny, of course I think a professional grade camera is better than an iPhone (or the lesser android "equivalents" ;) ) for situations that require professional grade photos or movies.

The basis for my liking the phone camera is mainly convenience, and the photo quality is plenty good enough for me. These articles explain the concept in more detail:

For probably 99% of people ..... using their cameras for photos is good enough.

Not for me who can take up to 1,500 photos in a day.

I have a friend who is oftentimes with me at live music. He has one of those $1,200 iPhones. He always takes pictures of whatever musicians we are seeing live. He tells me he relaxes about his picture taking when I am also there because he can rely upon me taking far superior pictures than he is able to do.

Again, my camera is not professional grade. It is a fixed lens camera that cost only $700.

Last week at softball practice there was another player who had with him $4,500 worth of camera equipment. Definitely took better pictures than my camera but I stick with mine. Not because of the money involved but because mine is actually more versatile and is far less equipment to lug around. Just my camera. No extra lens.

Here are examples of a picture of a camera taken by his camera (of me!) and one taken by my camera the same night. I was immediately struck by how the colors of his pictures seemed to be richer than mine.

Finally, I thought many of the other items on the list would be of interest to you and all the many technologically oriented people in this forum.

Thanks. Read it. Noticeably missing was any comparison of a picture taken with his iPhone and a quality camera.

I think I may have already written that I have a friend who I am oftentimes with at live music shows. He has the latest iPhone and uses it to document the shows he sees. He has many times told me that he relaxes when I am also there because he knows he will now have access to much better pictures of the shows.
