I'd not been to one pre-Covid -- March 2020.

A few weeks ago I was driving right by one and took out 37 books.

I currently owe my local library 30 dollars, and they won’t let me take out more books until I pay them.

So, no, I don’t use my local library lmao!!!

A lot of libraries in my area no longer charge fees. And, then, they will only put you in your status if the amount owed is above a certain amount (for those who used to or still do charge fees).

At least three times a week. It is our go to place. I wish I lived within walking distance. I'd be there every night. Just to read a magazine, or find something off the shelf.

I wonder if you see a distinction between using the public library online versus going in physically?

A lot of people are pleasantly surprised to find out how many resources are available online if you have a library card/membership. In fact a lot of streaming and subscription services that would otherwise be cut off by paywall are available through the library portal. Give it a try.

I go in physically once in a while, but I access the library online quite frequently.

While I do a lot of reading electronically with my Kobo (used to be Kindle till it died), there's nothing like the physical library for just walking around and browsing titles you would have never considered or seen online. I do occasionally check books out electronically.

Thank you for pointing that out. I didn't mention it in the OP but I'll add a note.
I pretty much go in physically after I "order" (place a hold) online and the books become available. But that's because the opening hours are now damn short. It's like a 4-hour window if they're open at all. I occasionally download an audiobook for rental or an e-book.

I use the library all the time. We have Overdrive / Libby as well as Kanopy and Hoopla. All great online resources.

Used to go physically al the time before COVID, but have pretty much stopped that since we're living carefully....which is a shame cause I love buying their super cheap used books.

I assume all of you have the same thing that I have -- an interlibrary system wherein you can take books out of one library and return them at another? And, order books and pick which library you want to pick them up at?

"My" library is not the one closest to but the one I drive by most often.

Even though I live in a rural area I have used about 7 libraries in my area to get items from.

That's correct, my library system is countywide so it has a wide reach.

We also had an option for "interlibrary loans" where you could get books from all over the US with worldcat. That was pretty cool, though they've been quite liberal in fulfilling my oddball digital purchase requests (and now I just buy the few books I can't get either way if I still want it badly enough).

My goal nowadays is to buy 12 books a year since 2020...though I've actually averaged about 14.

I can go into my Quicken program to get the actual amounts .... but two years October 2020 (?) during Amazon Prime (two) days I went through my entire Amazon Wish list. I had never before done that. I think there were items on it from 10+ years previous. That meant that many of the book that I'd put on it were selling for far less than when they'd first come out.

I know I spent a full 8 hours on Amazon that night - something like 5:30 PM to 2:30 AM and spent about a $1,000. I'm guessing I bought about 50 books (among other things) in that $1,000. I know I try to set a limit of $8 per book delivered and I did not buy that many high priced other items so maybe it was closer to 75 books. 100? As I said I can go into Quicken to see the exact number I bought that night.

Yes, Interlibrary loans. I had no idea until a friend told me about 15 years ago. It has made life much easier.

My problem is that I'm really good at wanting books...but not very good at reading them after purchase.

It's not easy to guess what future-me will want to read when that future-me becomes present me.

I got boxes of books in the house to prove that.

Hence the recent limit...which frankly is most likely higher than it should be. I really ought to go through my backlog.

And why I love the library. Though I suspect it is a bourgeois subsidy to the middle class that really doesn't have a proper place in a libertarian society.

Whatevers, it's better than a subsidy for a fucking sports arena.
