I had to search as well. I thought it was referring to somebody named Eli. Apparently it's "explain like I'm 5".

I’ve told Boglerdude a half a dozen times that this is not reddit, but he continues to use the eli5 abbreviation as if it’s standard English and all the fogies here would just know. Irony. This is the Explain Like I’m 55 forum.

As I prior stated somewhere here....when new people come here...experienced veterans just throw around all kinds of acronyms like they should be as well understood by a totally new person as a veteran understands them all....
