I don't believe it was to "abolish" but to prevent "expansion"....

That's true, and it wasn't for high-minded reasons of racial equality, it was selfishly to ensure that only the elite from the North, not the elite from the South, would run the territories.

But of course, this whole thread is one that would fall under Maddie's wise advice to ignore...
